Hauppauge announces StreamEez to broadcast live HD video

Image

Hauppauge, not satisfied with only bringing DVR-like functions to the Broadway this week — has unleashed a new box called the StreamEez that links your HD video camera to your computer for live broadcasts. HDMI or component video hook it up on the cam side, USB on the computer side. It uses H.264 video compression and is compatible with sites like USTREAM that require the RTMP protocol. The box plus Windows software starts at $299. Everything but the price probably sounds pretty familiar since the incredibly similar Livestream Broadcaster is also just about on the scene, though, it’ll run you about $195 more. Take a gander at the PR after the break.

Top Ways To Boost Your Home's Value | Our Home Tools

People who want to sell homes, refinance, or receive a home equity should acknowledge the importance of property value. Raising the value is an important way to increase equity and receive the best possible investment. In regards to home improvement, it is best to start with the exterior because the outside is the first view that customers see. Painting, landscaping, and concrete garage installation are just three ways that homeowners can improve the value of their residence.

Painting

Dousing a house in a vibrant color is a simple and obvious way to improve property value and appearance. Homeowners can easily paint the exterior and improve the quality of the first impression. Painting the interior also works. There are many color varieties available and colors can be mixed to increase the range of available options. Even so, exterior painting is a demanding skill that people should do only once. To ensure that the outcome lasts for years, painters must also prepare the surface properly.

Concrete garage

People who have plenty of vacant areas might want to consider constructing a concrete garage. This shelter protects one or more cars, and has a wide range of other uses. It lasts a lifetime, and helps to save money on maintenance, repair, and replacements. The concrete is stronger than other structures and tends to experience less leakage and damage.

Some people believe that these structures are too expensive, difficult, or time-consuming to build. They might also think that the structure could disrupt the land or property. However, the truth is that these garages are one of the most useful investments a homeowner can make, and one that can be built cheaply with components that can be prefabricated at another location.

Landscaping

A thorough landscaping project that beautifies the front or back garden is the best way to improve outdoor property value. Trees, shrubs, flowers and other plants are admirable items that can be included in any garden renovation project. Countless garden and landscaping ideas are available online for both amateur and professional designers.

A simple idea is to turn the front door into a focal point and paint it a color that compliments the house or provides a striking contrast. There are plenty of materials, shapes, and designs that can transform a walkway, and one popular design includes framing the door or walkway with plants, flowers, or rocks. Furniture always lures people to the front and back areas. A sitting area that is decorative and arranged carefully gives the impression that the property owner is stylish and well-accommodated. Also, outdoor lighting enhances appeal and security after hours. Solar lights are energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and durable. They can dot the walkway or rims around trees without needing to be wired or installed.

Most people enjoy properties that have outdoor porches or decks. This area should be made of durable, long-lasting material and the look must compliment the entire home. Similar to a porch or garden, a yard fence also improves the value. Most people enjoy private yards and fencing makes the area more attractive to potential buyers.

Putting a lot into the curb appeal is one of the best ways to promote buyer interest. Home remodelers should stay away from projects that are costly and so personalized that home shoppers become disinterested. Sometimes homeowners pay significant money to update an area, only to find that many buyers find it distasteful and the property has become devalued ? make sure that you make the right choice for your property.

Microcap Stock Investing | Top Finance Blog

Many good reasons exist to trade microcap stocks, sometimes referred to as penny stocks. Briefly, you can get started with only a small amount of money, make quick hits trading them and move on to some other stock, without keeping your money tied up long term. If you have ever thought about getting in to the stock market, they are a good place to start.

After you have learned enough about microcap stocks to feel comfortable risking some money in the market, one of the most important choices you will make is which broker to use. There are many things to consider when choosing a broker for your trading?support structure, stability, OTC-stock friendliness, and fees being most important. You want a broker that is on solid financial footing themselves and that can help you decide which stocks to buy or sell. Finally, you want a brokerage firm that trades in the over the counter (OTC) markets daily, and will not charge so much in account and transaction fees that it cancels out all your gains.

Here are some things you will want to ask any broker you are considering before you send them any money:

1. Are you a registered broker? They should be able to provide proof that they have registered with the securities regulation bureau in the state or states where they operate.

2. How long have you been in business? Obviously, the more stable the company is, the better.

3. Has the company had any arbitration cases filed against them? Are those cases settled, and what was the result?

4. Is your brokerage OTC friendly? Some brokerages handle these trades, but not efficiently, and really do not want to be bothered. You will want to stay away from those brokers.

5. Are there different choices for fees with your brokerage? For instance, can I pay you a flat monthly fee? You will likely be trading more frequently than people who trade large caps, so you want reasonable fees.

6. Has the firm ever been investigated by any of the stock exchanges, the SEC, or the state? Why? Finding out if a firm is ethical is of prime importance.

7. Does your agency pay brokers by commission? They might not always have your best interests at heart when recommending stocks, but rather their own paycheck.

8. What are your typical clients like? Brokers who deal with millionaires on a daily basis are not going to give your $1000 account as much attention, now are they?

9. What is your personal philosophy about microcap stocks? If they tell you that they do not buy them, find another broker. You want someone whose trading philosophy is similar to yours.

10. Can I have the names and numbers of a few long-term clients?

You will want to deal with a brokerage firm that patiently answers these questions. After all, if they are ?too busy? to try to earn your business, what kind of service can you expect down the road? Even after you have their answers, perform your own due diligence online. Look them on the state?s securities website, or call to confirm that they are registered and do not have any sanctions pending. In addition, Google the firm?s name and the brokerage name for any news or information about them, and find and read many different reviews of the company.

Rome cracks down on marauding centurions

The city has given a deadline of April 6 for the tourist terrors to clear away from the Colosseum area.

By Adam L. Freeman,?Contributor / April 2, 2012

Rome has given the centurions a deadline to clear out. The solders in question aren’t from the ranks of an ancient legion, but are modern-day performers who pose for tourist?photos at the Colosseum.

Men and women decked out in chest plates and helmets eke out a?tax-free living at Rome?s most popular attraction, posing for photos with foreign?visitors for 5 or 10 euros. Disoriented, jet lagged, or simply scared,?tourists have been known to pay up to 50 euros ($67). Some have been roughed?up when they refuse.

Arrests were made last summer in an undercover operation with police?in tunics and sandals handcuffing centurions and gladiators for?ripping off tourists. A recent Italian media report cited a policeman?as saying the centurions are all ex-convicts, ?every last one of?them.?

Now the city government says ?basta!? and wants them to pack up their?swords, shields, and ensigns and clear out by April 6.

?This will end badly. We?ll wage a revolution. We?ll burn down the?Coliseum rather than move from here,? a 21st-century centurion?recently told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Along with the fake ancient Roman soldiers, the city aims to rid?itself of the vast illegal industry of food and souvenir vendors that?feeds off the 6 million people who every year visit the site where?Russell Crowe avenged his family?s murder in the 2000 sword-and-sandal blockbuster “Gladiator.”

City and national officials say they are defending?Rome-the-living-museum from an image akin to theme parks where?visitors feast on fast food and ham it up for the camera with?fairytale characters.

But the Italian economy is in recession and its prisons overcrowded so government bureaucrats should be vigilant for unrest?in the legionary ranks. They might want to reconsider a plan that puts?ex-cons out of work.

Sandia National Laboratories generates neutrons in a radical way

Image

The Responsive Neutron Generator Product Deployment Center (say that quickly five times) at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque, NM has discovered a way to take the conventional cylindrical tubes out of the equation and introduce a more computer-chip like, mass-produced neutron source on an astonishingly smaller scale. For those seeking lay terms, we’re hearing that possible practical applications include implantation close to tumors in cancer patients to minimize time in the hospital for treatment, and sensors for contraband. Sandia Labs’ technical staff has created what it calls a “neutristor,” which produces one neutron per transistor, a concept that was directly inspired by the two transistors per bit on microchips. The team is currently seeking funding to ensure future viability, and well, to pay for stuff. Check out the video after the break, as well as further information at the source.

Sounders shut out Dynamo

By TIM BOOTH

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:37 a.m. ET March 24, 2012

SEATTLE (AP) – David Estrada scored his fourth goal in two games on a deflected shot in the 23rd minute, Brad Evans converted a penalty kick four minutes later and the Seattle Sounders rolled to a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on Friday night.

Seattle (2-0-0) took down its second straight Eastern Conference foe after opening the MLS season with a 3-1 win over Toronto last Saturday. The Sounders are hoping to make the most of a favorable early schedule that puts six of their first eight league matches at home before spending the majority of May, June and July on the road.

Estrada, who had a hat trick last weekend, kept his goal scoring streak going when his blast from outside the penalty box deflected into the net. Then came a tug-of-war over whether Estrada would own the goal and eventually it was announced as Estrada’s goal with about 10 minutes left in the match.

Seattle controlled possession for most of the night and made life easy for goalkeeper Michael Gspurning, whose only real threat came early in the match. Will Bruin was set up perfectly by Brian Ching but the left-footed shot was tipped over the crossbar by Gspurning.

Estrada at first was credited with his fourth goal of the season after collecting his first three goals in MLS play in the opener against Toronto. He was right there when a corner kick was headed out of the box, and got off a right-footed shot before the ball touched the ground. It appeared on goal before it deflected off Houston defender Geoff Cameron and past Dynamo keeper Tally Hall, who was diving in the opposite direction of the deflection.

Then started the back-and-forth about ownership of the goal. Just before halftime, it was announced that the goal was going to be an own-goal since replay made it difficult to see if Estrada’s initial shot would be on goal. Then in the waning moments of the game, the goal was changed back to Estrada’s.

Before Houston (2-1-0) had a chance to respond to Estrada’s strike, the Sounders were threatening again. The Sounders earned another corner and Seattle’s Patrick Ianni was fouled by Cameron when he undercut the pushing forward for the corner kick. Referee Baldomero Toledo didn’t hesitate pointing to the penalty spot and Evans converted the PK even with Hall guessing correctly on his attempted diving save.

Houston started the season with wins at Chivas USA and San Jose for the best start in franchise history. It’s beginning the season with a seven-game road trip while its new soccer-specific stadium at home is completed. The Dynamo don’t play their first home match until May 12 against D.C. United.

Joystiq: Your mother-in-law is going to love Angry Birds Space

Image

Rovio’s furious fowl have fought menacing swine on traditional battlefields, foreign fronts and even through seasonal holidays — outer space was obviously the next logical step. In case you somehow haven’t heard, Angry Birds Space sees casual gaming’s most perturbed feathered heroes escaping terra firma to, as always, reclaim their stolen eggs. Joystiq describes the title as a tweaked, but familiar affair with a new twist that literally changes the gravity of the situation — challenging players with inventive stages built around planetoids that divert and redirect the birds’ trajectories. Sure, it might not resurrect a dead horse, but the new mechanic, they said, is probably enough to keep your in-laws entertained. Hit the source link below check out Joystiq’s full review.

Business Innovation In Practice: Do You Know Richard Bransons …

on March 21, 2012 by Nikos Chatzis in Business, News, Comments (1)

(Source of Photo: Airplane Pictures / Spencer Wilmot / Virgin Atlantic 747 / Richard Branson /)

By Richard Branson

  • I am often asked if I have found a secret ? or at least a consistent answer ? to successfully building businesses over my career.
  • So I?ve spent some time thinking about what characterizes so many of Virgin?s successful ventures and, importantly, what went wrong when we did not get it right. Reflecting across 40 years I have come up with five ?secrets.? / Richard Branson /

Richard Branson: No. 1: Enjoy What You Are Doing?

  • Because starting a business is a huge amount of hard work, requiring a great deal of time, you had better enjoy it. When I started Virgin from a basement flat in West London, I did not set out to build a business empire. I set out to create something I enjoyed that would pay the bills.
  • There was no great plan or strategy. The name itself was thought up on the hoof. One night some friends and I were chatting over a few drinks and decided to call our group Virgin, as we were all new to business. The name stuck and had a certain ring to it.
  • For me, building a business is all about doing something to be proud of, bringing talented people together and creating something that?s going to make a real difference to other people?s lives.
  • A businesswoman or a businessman is not unlike an artist. What you have when you start a company is a blank canvas; you have to fill it. Just as a good artist has to get every single detail right on that canvas, a businessman or businesswoman has to get every single little thing right when first setting up in business in order to succeed. However, unlike a work of art, the business is never finished. It constantly evolves.
  • If a businessperson sets out to make a real difference to other people?s lives, and achieves that, he or she will be able to pay the bills and have a successful business to boot. / Richard Branson /

Richard Branson: No. 2: Create Something That Stands Out?

  • Whether you have a product, a service or a brand, it is not easy to start a company and to survive and thrive in the modern world. In fact, you?ve got to do something radically different to make a mark today.
  • Look at the most successful businesses of the past 20 years. Microsoft, Google or Apple, for example, shook up a sector by doing something that hadn?t ever been done and by continually innovating. They are now among the dominant forces. / Richard Branson /
  • Businesses generally consist of a group of people, and they are your biggest assets. / Richard Branson /

Richard Branson: No. 4: Be a Good Leader?

  • As a leader you have to be a really good listener. You need to know your own mind but there is no point in imposing your views on others without some debate. No one has a monopoly on good ideas or good advice.
  • Get out there, listen to people, draw people out and learn from them. As a leader you?ve also got to be extremely good at praising people. Never openly criticize people; never lose your temper, and always lavish praise on your colleagues for a job well done.
  • People flourish if they?re praised. Usually they don?t need to be told when they?ve done wrong because most of the time they know it. If somebody is not working out, don?t automatically throw him or her out of the company. A company should genuinely be a family. So see if there?s another job within the company that suits them better. On most occasions you?ll find something for every single kind of personality. / Richard Branson /

Richard Branson: No. 5: Be Visible?

  • A good leader does not get stuck behind a desk. I?ve never worked in an office ? I?ve always worked from home ? but I get out and about, meeting people. It seems I am traveling all the time but I always have a notebook in my back pocket to jot down questions, concerns or good ideas.
  • If I?m on a Virgin Atlantic plane, I make certain to get out and meet all the staff and many of the passengers. If you meet a group of Virgin Atlantic crew members, you are going to have at least 10 suggestions or ideas. If I don?t write them down, I may remember only one the next day. By writing them down, I remember all 10. Get out and shake hands with all the passengers on the plane, and again, there are going to be people who had a problem or have a suggestion. Write it down, make sure that you get their names, get their e-mail addresses, and make sure the next day that you respond to them.
  • Of course, I try to make sure that we appoint managing directors who have the same philosophy. That way we can run a large group of companies in the same way a small business owner runs a family business ? keeping it responsive and friendly.
  • When you?re building a business from scratch, the key word for many years is ?survival.? It?s tough to survive. In the beginning you haven?t got the time or energy to worry about saving the world. You?ve just got to fight to make sure you can look after your bank manager and be able to pay the bills. Literally, your full concentration has to be on surviving.
  • ?Obviously, if you don?t survive, just remember that most businesses fail and the best lessons are usually learned from failure. You must not get too dispirited. Just get back up and try again. / Richard Branson /
  • globalnewspointer.net: Richard Branson?s advice is a real call to constant innovation and applied business leadership.
  • It is clear that for achieving to be a successful entrepreneur you have to know yourself first.
  • Finally, it is realistic to accept that you need other people to listen to you and listen to them, to support you and support them and to brainstorming with them? / Richard Branson /
